Spring Pastel Interior Trends, 2016

With London Fashion Week coming to a close a couple of weeks ago, now is a really good time to have a look at trends that are being duplicated in fashion and in the world of interior design. The interior design community often looks at the current fashion trends and styles and often draws inspiration from the different colour pallets being used during the event.

With spring on the horizon, the trend for pastel shades was very fitting at this years Fashion week and it is a trend that is very strongly being mirrored in the world of interiors. This may be due to Pantone announcing that Rose Quartz and Sky were its colours of 2016. The 2 shades have gained an almost instant popularity as a result. Pink, in particular has gained great credibility- it is no longer banished to a babies nursery or little girls ‘princess’ bedrooms, but is now being used along side the ever popular grey in living areas to create contrast, and give it a more ‘grown up’ look.

Barker & Barkers designer, Janet Dixon notes that ‘Using a pale grey as the dominant colour, the addition of an understated bright yellow will create a focal point within the interior. Mixing different patterns using a soft palette can create a vibrant feel without making an interior feel chaotic.’

Pastel shades work perfectly with another interior trend on SS16 with is the use of metallics. Whether is with accessories or textiles, shades of silver, copper and gold are being widely used to co-ordinate a pastel colour scheme. Pink and copper, blue with silver, mint with bronze are being paired together more and more – a quick Pinterest search brings up hundreds of results already!

Pastel shades are often complemented by darker shades were widely used on the catwalks of London Fashion Week. Purple proved a very popular colour and this can easily be replicated in the home. Try using soft pastel shades of pink or lilac along side a deep aubergine purple with metallic accents. It is important to remember to keep the bold colours minimal- you don’t want to overuse it and drown out the accent lighter shades altogether. Such as the case with clothes and fashion, layering can also be used in the home. Try using the lighter pastel shades in patterned cushions and curtains, co-ordinated with metallic light fittings and keep the dark statement colour to one wall.

The Cambridge Edition, Feb 2016

With Pantone announcing their colours for 2016 as Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue late last year, many of the spring editions focus on the soft pastel shades. Barker & Barker’s Serenity collection of checks and stripes feature the 2 colours and is therefore featured heavily in many editions for spring 2016.

The Cambridge edition has a wonderful piece giving lots of details and tips on how to use the 2 colours in the home, whether it is with accessories or statement pieces.  They feature our Serenity Fabrics Pink & Sky striped fabric along side the calm room set image featuring the fabric as curtains, cushions and light upholstery on the miniature sofa.

Home Focus, Jan / Feb 2016

Although it is still very much winter time, the world of interior design is already looking forward to spring and the soft pastel colours that are often associated with the season.

Home Focus have looked at the ‘Winter Pastels’ that can be used to inject the freshness of spring during the last cold and dreary weeks of winter, paying particular attention to our Serenity Check & Striped fabrics in Sky & Pink, noting that they can add a pop of colour on soft furnishings in the home.

Cambridge Mag Jan 16

Cambridge Magazine, January 2016

Following Pantone’s announcement late last year, Cambridge Magazine are highlighting how to use the 2 colours (Quartz and Sky) in the home. Firstly, looking at quartz. Weather it is a subtle hint using accessories, or full on pink walls and curtains, its certain the beautiful shade of pink is going nowhere soon! Our Serenity checks and stripes fabric in Pink with co-ordinating Serenity Theoropda Wallpaper looks stunning in any bedroom. Also, continuing the ‘ombre’ trend, is our Dierama Luxor fabric in Porcelain, which looks would create a statement in any home.

Kitchens Bedrooms & Bathrooms, January 2016

We were luckily enough to be featured three times in Kitchens Bedrooms & Bathrooms January edition.

Our Pink Serenity bedroom scene was featured in the Bedroom focus section of the magazine, noting that our Serenity has real versatility due to the way the fabrics and wallpapers co-ordinate. The collection has been designed so that a number of fabrics and wallpapers can be used together to create fun and interesting decor schemes in all rooms- not only bedrooms. Pink is also a very on trend colour this year too (see Pantone colour of the year!) and is already proving to be the more popular colour of the collection.
